Andersen's Contemporary is pleased to participate in Basel Social Club for the fourth time. This year, we present works by Esben Weile Kjær and Alfredo Aceto.
Basel Social Club transforms a vacant multi-story office building into a temporary social stage for art. This year’s edition reconsiders the workplace not as a site of production, but as a site of critical reflection.
For Basel Social Club, Esben Weile Kjær presents a series of works centered on his recurring protagonist, THE RAT, which will overrun the office spaces. Traditionally associated with decay and collapse, the rat is reimagined as a glamorous, powerful, and magnetic figure through rhinestone-covered sculptures, monumental golden LION rats, and shiny metallic RAT BAGs - created in collaboration with Anne Sofie Madsen. Together, these works transform an unwanted pest into a symbol of glamour, desire, and cultural power.
For Basel Social Club, Alfredo Aceto will present a new series of lamp sculptures Oil Lamps. Oil Lamps connect the world of engines and the garage with its fluids, mechanics, and heteronormative masculinist iconography to the domestic and administrative space of the desk lamp. By turning a motor oil bottle into an intimate light fixture, the object becomes an ambiguous body where the outside slides into the inside, where DIY becomes furniture, and where virile codes quietly evoke the history of Italian queer militancy (Fuori!/Sandro Penna). Taken together, these lamps form a small, fragile luminous group that rehearses questions of belonging, care, and transmission.
Alfredo Aceto has been nominated for the Swiss Art Award this year.
We hope to see you at Basel Social Club.
