Blood Feathers (084)
Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen
-
The show marks Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen’s first exhibition at the gallery, which runs concurrently to the artist’s solo show at Copenhagen Contemporary (CC), I am not what you see.
Taking as a starting point the investigation which culminated in the exhibition I am not what you see, Cuenca Rasmussen presents two newly realized works for her solo show at Andersen’s: a monumental steel sculpture titled Blood Feathers / Blod Fjer (2021) and a photographic work, Borrowed Feathers / Lånte Fjer (2021). Using the visual analogy of the process in which a bird shreds old worn feathers, the works expands on the artist’s investigation which examine nomadic life, ethnicity, and identity, themes that Cuenca Rasmussen has been working with since the beginning of her artistic practice.
Throughout her career, Cuenca Rasmussen has evolved a definite cross-aesthetic expression. Text and other mechanisms such as music, costumes, and a stringent scenography play a significant role in her narratives. Adopting a critical and humorous approach, she asks questions about ethnicity, identity, gender, social relations, and affiliation. Many of these themes reflect Cuenca Rasmussen’s dual nationality with her Filipino mother and Danish father, making her artistic practice distinct, since she points to several cultures simultaneously and, through her art, defines a third position: creating her own home in and with the artwork to take with her wherever she goes.
