Just Like That (081)
Farshad Farzankia
-
The solo show "Just Like That" marks Farzankia’s second exhibition at the gallery, following the artist’s inaugural presentation at Andersen’s in 2018, titled “Bread and Flower”
The work of Iranian-born artist Farshad Farzankia includes a vast collection of visual references, based on personal and collective historical memories. Just like a sketchbook, his paintings assemble a repertoire of images including individual and family portraits, birds and plants while the stylized motives trace inspiration from the iconography of the Persian rugs which used to line the floors of his childhood home. Utilizing icons of personal importance, the work of Farzankia questions about how memories and objects maintain meaning across real and imagined border.
Just Like That presents new works realized by the artist in 2020, a time that more than ever has made us ponder on the uncertainties of the present. In an attempt to reflect on the now, the exhibition invites the viewer to a close and intimate conversation with Farzankia’s mind and practice and to experience recent developments in his work. By working on a wide range of media such as wood (“Faithful Poets Whose Songs Were Fit for Apollo”, 2020) paper and canvas (“Those We Remember Well For The alongside never exhibited silkscreen prints, the exhibition also reflects on Farzankia’s enduring dedication and interest on the possibilities of materiality and how this forms the
basis for the artist’s own intuition and hand to create. Good They Did Mankind”, 2020 and “Tomorrow I Can”, 2020).
