Andersen’s Contemporary is proud to inaugurate the new Copenhagen gallery space with the second solo show at the gallery by Tomas Saraceno. The point of departure for the exhibition is the fact that scientists use structures of spiders’ webs to describe the origin and structure of the universe. Tomas Saraceno has collaborated with spider researchers and astrophysicists for several years and created projects and artworks that belong in a cross section between art, architecture, and science. The exhibition will display 3 new works, which all in different ways are connected to the above and to Saraceno’s ongoing projects Air-Port-City and Cloud-City - networks of habitable structures that float in the air. In the gallery are displayed 3 large glass spheres and inside these spheres are Black Widow spiders, weaving their remarkable three-dimensional cobweb. The spheres are accompanied by large drawings - ink jet prints on paper - framed and hung on the wall. The drawings are made from 3Dscannings of an actual Black Widow’s web. Finally on display is LSRA-2009-1049 - an application to ISS and ESA (The International Space Station and The European Space Agency), which has now reached the final stage for approval. The applicants - Tomas Saraceno and four of the world’s leading astrophysicists and scientist, wants to send a spider out into space to study how it will behave and create its 3D spider web in microgravity Saraceno’s art explores possible visions of a better world, generating poetic, playful propositions for a human life in balance with the planet. His works occupy the border regions between science, art and architecture. They can include anything from spheres and cloud creations to flying gardens, space elevators and futuristic dwellings. The dream of a weightless state and the possibility of a human being moving freely above the clouds, free of the confines of gravity, and free from national borders, recur in several works.
